Guide

A PDF or a scan to Word, for law firms and notaries.

Submissions to answer point by point, a contract to amend, scanned co-ownership rules you need to quote, an old title deed to transcribe: the document arrives as a PDF, the work happens in Word. Anoni converts on your computer. The document goes through no online service, which matters for a profession bound by confidentiality.

The method

  1. Step 01

If it is a photo, make it a PDF first

Anoni's tool takes PDFs. A photo or an image becomes a PDF with what you already have: on iPhone, “Scan Documents” in Notes or Files; on a Mac, Preview then “Export as PDF”; on Windows, “Print” then “Microsoft Print to PDF”. A PDF received by e-mail or downloaded is ready as is.

    What arrives as a PDF

    • Opposing submissions and exhibits
    • A contract or draft deed from another firm
    • Co-ownership rules, articles of association
    • An old deed, letter or report, scanned

Text PDF or scan · .docx out

  2. Step 02

Open “PDF → Word” and drop the file

It is in the sidebar, under “Tools”, with its “100% local” badge. Drop the PDF, then choose where to save the .docx. The original PDF is not touched.

  3. Step 03

    Let the conversion finish

A PDF with text is quick and keeps headings, bold, italics, tables, images and page breaks. A scanned page goes through local text recognition, about a second per page, and comes out as editable paragraphs.

  4. Step 04

Review the pages read by text recognition

At the end, Anoni tells you how many pages went through OCR. Review them first for what cannot be wrong: names, dates, amounts, land registry references, lot numbers, shares. Text recognition slips most near a stamp or a signature.

  5. Step 05

Work in Word, then protect before sharing

The .docx opens in Word, LibreOffice or Pages. If it then goes to an AI or leaves the firm, Anoni pseudonymizes or redacts it, in the same app.

What to know

For lawyers.

Opposing submissions arrive as PDFs: in Word you can take each argument and answer it in order, quoting without retyping. A contract received as a PDF goes into Word so you can propose changes with tracked changes rather than margin comments. A ruling converts so you can quote its reasoning exactly. A scanned exhibit, letter, report or witness statement becomes text you can search and quote.

For notaries.

A draft deed sent as a PDF by another office is reworked without retyping. Co-ownership rules, articles of association or subdivision specifications, often scanned from paper, convert so you can quote the relevant clause word for word. An old title deed is transcribed to reuse the property description or the chain of title. In every case, review what text recognition read: a lot or a surface area misread cannot be fixed after signing.

What Word gets back, and what it does not.

A .docx is for editing: Anoni rebuilds the structure, not a photograph of the page. Paragraphs, headings, tables and images come across. The exact position of each line does not: the text reflows as soon as you edit it. A table without borders, such as a hand-laid price allocation, comes out as paragraphs. A scan gives clean text without the original formatting, which was never in the file.

We like iLovePDF. Just not for a deed.

For a toaster manual or a CV, iLovePDF and the other online converters are hard to beat: one tab, one click, done. For submissions, a deed or co-ownership rules, uploading the file to a website means handing it to a third party, with its servers, its terms and its retention period. For a profession bound by confidentiality, that is a transfer to justify. Anoni converts on the computer: nothing is uploaded, and the conversion works offline.

Then, anonymization.

Anoni is an anonymizer first. A .docx from the conversion can be pseudonymized before it goes to an AI, with the reply decoded back to the real names, or redacted before it is disclosed. The PDF to Word conversion itself is free and needs no Pro licence.

Questions

Can Anoni convert an image (JPG, PNG) to Word?

Not directly: the “PDF → Word” tool takes PDFs. Turn the image into a PDF first, with “Scan Documents” on iPhone, Preview on a Mac or “Microsoft Print to PDF” on Windows, then convert that PDF. Text recognition does the rest.

Are tables kept?

Tables with borders, yes, with their rows and columns. A table without borders comes out as paragraphs: check allocations and schedules.

Can it read a handwritten or very old deed?

Text recognition reads print and typewriting well, handwriting poorly. On an old deed, plan for a careful line-by-line review.

Is converting online a confidentiality problem?

It is a transfer of the document to a service provider, to be assessed as such. A conversion done on your computer transfers nothing, so the question does not arise.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. PDF to Word conversion needs no Pro licence, no subscription and has no page limit.

Which systems?

macOS, Windows and Linux.
